FINS supports SIDS through national capacity building by embedding a consultant within the finance or planning ministry to work with UNDESA in developing and implementing financing strategies using the INFF approach. It also fosters regional and global engagement through the FINS Xchange platform, enabling peer learning, knowledge sharing, and connections to the broader INFF community of practice.
As part of the FINS Xchange platform, UNDESA aims to facilitate a SIDS Peer Exchange on Debt Sustainability Strategies. SIDS face significant debt sustainability challenges, exacerbated by external shocks such as climate change, disasters and economic downturns. Many SIDS have pursued innovative financing solutions to enhance fiscal space and fiscal resilience, including debt-for-nature/climate swaps, blue/green bonds, and state-contingent debt clauses.
This Peer Exchange is designed to facilitate structured collaboration and peer learning among SIDS, enabling direct knowledge transfer, experience-sharing, and practical engagement on strengthening debt sustainability strategies and the conditions required to consider innovative debt instruments.
Phase 1: Regional Workshop
A regional workshop will convene SIDS officials to discuss debt sustainability strategies and facilitate peer exchange.
Phase 2: Structured SIDS–SIDS Cooperation
Building on the regional workshop, this phase will facilitate structured exchanges between SIDS interested in specific debt sustainability strategies, including development of a match-making platform.
