On 14-15 October 2023, FSDO/UN DESA, in collaboration with UNCDF and the Bangladesh Municipal Development Fund, implemented a Training of Trainers workshop for strengthening the capacity of local governments to increase the resilience, sustainability, and inclusiveness of infrastructure assets in Bangladesh. As part of the workshop, UN DESA launched the Bangla version of the UN Handbook on Infrastructure Asset Management, and distributed this publication to all local and national governments present in the training session. During the workshop, 45 officials from 9 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 5 national level institutions learnt how to adapt and implement the UN toolkit for sustainable infrastructure asset management. The workshop also encouraged interactive peer learning exercises for officials to discuss and share best practices, reflect on how to free up fiscal space and enhance tax collection through effective IAM, as well as to highlight the need for a national level infrastructure asset management policy. Officials from all 9 ULBs also designed a first draft of a forward-looking, risk- informed, and data-driven Asset Management Action Plan (AMAP) in support of one of their priority assets. Going forward, nominated asset management champions from all ULBs will reflect and include UN DESA’s feedback to their AMAPs to produce a revised action plan for future endorsement from the local governments.
