The 2021 ECOSOC Special Meeting was focus on how countries can use tax policy and administration in tackling some of our most pressing social, economic and environmental challenges – in an increasingly digitalized economy and in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting provided an opportunity to address emerging issues of tax policy and administration related to (i) taxation and inequality, (ii) environmental taxation, and (iii) taxation and financing for health systems. Participants include members and observers of ECOSOC, members of its expert body on tax matters, senior representatives of national tax authorities, relevant international and regional organizations, as well as civil society and academia.

Participants contributed to enhancing the impact of expert and intergovernmentally-driven UN policy guidance on tax matters, at the global, regional, national and subnational levels.

This year’s Special Meeting aims ultimately to help ensure that inclusive and effective tax policies become part and parcel of the Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs.

The meeting was held immediately following the 22nd Session of the UN Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters (Committee), which took place on the 19-23 and 26-28 April 2021.

You can follow the meeting in real time on UN Web Tv at http://webtv.un.org. There will be simultaneous interpretation into the six official UN languages. The Webcast will also be archived and made available after the meeting.

If you have any questions or wish to submit a question any of the panelists, please send a short email to FSDCAPDEV@UN.ORG prior to the start of the event.
